American Bryan Clay of Kaneohe leads the Olympic decathlon after completion of five of its 10 events in Beijing today.
Clay finished the first day with 4,521 points. Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus is second with 4,443 and Trey Hardee of the U.S. third with 4,428.
“I had three very, very good events,” said Clay, who was first in the 100 and long jump and second in the shot put. “Then I had one not so good event, a poor event, which was high jump. Then just an OK event in the 400, nothing special in the 400, but it was OK.”
Clay completed the first day’s events with a time of 48.92 in the 400 meters, worth 865 points.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to send a quick update from Beijing. Things here are going really well! My practices for the past few days have been pretty low key and easy (to get my body ready) and they have been going great! Everything feels good and I am definitely ready to go! We start tomorrow and I can’t wait!

Q: Bryan, best of luck, all the Hapa Kepanis peeps worldwide are pulling for you. My query is how much of an Asian influence did your mom bring to your family, e.g. did you eat a lot of Japanese food and/or get exposed to Japanese culture?
A: Japanese culture and food were a huge part of my life growing up. My mother made sure I knew who I was and where I came from.
Q: Bryan, why did you choose Azusa Pacific an NAIA school over a NCAA Division I School? Azusa Pacific has an excellent reputation in the decathlon. Most people don’t realize some of our countries greatest decathletes have come out of the NAIA. GO FOR GOLD!
